Employee Spotlight: Mary McKim

We’d like to introduce you to Mary McKim, our Windsor location seamstress. We hope you enjoy her story:

Growing up in South Carolina, Mary enjoyed watching her mother sew and repair clothing and decided that it was something she wanted to do. She learned all the basics at home, but by high school Mary was eager for more and enrolled in sewing classes. Her passion didn’t stop there and she went on to trade school for commercial sewing.

After graduation, Mary relocated to Connecticut and was hired by Pratt and Whitney. She worked there for three years until she started a family and decided to stay home to raise her children. Once they were off to school, she was ready to get back to work. She worked part-time doing alterations for Hourglass Cleaners before going back to a full-time schedule. She spent the next 19 years at Mayflower Laundry in Hartford before making a change. She then worked at Fillings Department Store, now Macy’s, and J.C. Penny for the next 15 years.

Was it time to retire? Mary thought yes. She packed up her sewing kit and was ready for some well-deserved time off, but the sewing bug never left. She retired for a year and decided once again to go back to work. With all of Mary’s experience, we are lucky to have her. She has been with Best for the past two years and is doing a fantastic job. If you are in our Windsor location be sure to say hello to Mary!
