Caring for the American Flag
American flags, proudly displayed on homes and business across the nation, endure climate changes on a daily basis. Even though flags are made of high-quality, durable outdoor fabric, they are not miracle materials. Weather, location and usage will affect the life of your flag so here are some tips on how to keep it in good condition:
1. Put it up in the morning and take it down at dusk, Monday through Friday. This will extend the flag’s life by reducing exposure from 24 hours daily, 7 days each week to 8-10 hours daily, 5 days each week. Your flag will not have to withstand the 50 MPG raging storm that came through in the middle of the night or on a Saturday afternoon. If you do prefer to fly the flag throughout the day and night, the flag should always be illuminated.
2. At the first sign of a frayed flying edge, take the flag down and have it repaired. If you wait too long, the damage will increase beyond repair.
3. Wash your flag occasionally to remove the dirt and grime which can deteriorate the flag fabric. Use cold or lukewarm water with a regular laundry detergent, like the one that you would use to wash your clothes. If you’re nervous about washing it yourself, bring it to Best. We always clean American flags for FREE throughout the year.
4. After washing the flag, completely dry it before folding and storing it for future use. This will prevent mold and mildew. If you are putting it back up, it should also be dry because, if wet, it can be stained and dirtied by dirt and by the flagpole itself.
