Spring Cleaning for Your Closet

As temperatures begin to rise, you can’t help but notice a hint of Spring in the air. For many it’s time to come out of their winter cocoon and get organizing. The house is one thing, but your clothes are another. Here are some great tips for “spring cleaning” your closet:

1. Start by creating “give away” and “throw away” piles, making sure to include your shoes and accessories.

2. When sorting through your clothing don’t forget to use the two year rule – if you haven’t worn it in two years, get rid of it!

3. Don’t keep clothing you don’t like or feel badly about throwing away. If it’s something you haven’t worn, it’s taking up much needed space for the clothes you currently wear and new ones coming in.

4. When your piles are complete, toss your old/worn styles. Take your gently-used pieces to a consignment store or organize a clothing swap with your friends.

5. Once your closet is empty, make sure you vacuum and wipe it down to remove dirt, dust and insects.

6. Launder and/or dryclean your clothes before returning them to your closet. Small amounts of food and oils that often are not visible to the eye can set in the fabric and attract unwanted critters. Stains left unattended can also be harder to remove at a later date.

7. Now that your closet and clothes are clean, it’s time for the fun part of putting everything back in. Arranging your clothes by color and by type is more pleasing to the eye. You can even jazz up your closet with colorful hangers, shoe racks and laundry baskets.

Happy Cleaning!
